On April 11, 2024, the national mainstream market stainless steel social inventory of 1,184,125 tons, an increase of 6,451 tons over the previous week, an increase of 0.55%, of which:
Cold-rolled stainless steel inventory of 717,704 tons, an increase of 18,896 tons over the previous week, an increase of 2.70%;
The total inventory of hot-rolled stainless steel is 466421 tons, down 12,445 tons from last week, a decrease of 2.60%;
The total inventory of 200 series is 208,622 tons, down 4,796 tons from last week, a decrease of 2.25%;
The total inventory of 300 series is 756,980 tons, an increase of 5836 tons over the previous week, an increase of 0.78%;
The total inventory of 400 series is 218,523 tons, an increase of 5411 tons over the previous week, an increase of 2.54%.
Wuxi inventory 688,698 tons, an increase of 26,586 tons over the previous week, an increase of 4.02%;
Foshan inventory of 356,642 tons, 14689 tons less than last week, a decrease of 3.96%;

5. Market analysis
That Indonesia has now become a big (and growing) player in the nickel market hardly comes as a shock to them. Indonesia is estimated to account for about half of global primary nickel production in the coming years, giving the country significant control over the direction of the market.
Indonesia has also been very clear about its intention to keep nickel prices below $18,000 a tonne. According to the Financial Times, more than half of the worlds nickel production would be unprofitable if prices fell as low as $16,500. Indonesia, however, is largely immune because of its use of cheaper energy sources such as coal. In the absence of government support, falling prices look set to take more production offline. If that happens, it could provide support to the market. However, as production levels in Indonesia continue to rise, downside risks to prices remain.
The current supply of 304 stainless steel is strong and weak, the inventory pressure is large, and the rebound in nickel prices has triggered an increase in buying activities. However, with nickel prices starting to pull back, sentiment seems to have weakened as the stainless steel surcharge looks set to fall again. At the end of the first quarter, dealers still described the stainless steel market as "slow."
