The EU announces the extension of safeguard measures for steel products, including stainless steel, until 2026
Postdate:2024-07-02 Views:519
According to the GERBER website on June 25th, despite extensive criticism from European consumers, the European Commission has officially extended EU safeguard measures until June 2026. Will ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe confirm its climate targets to allow exemption payments for carbon dioxide emissions?
1. EU safeguard measures officially extended until June 2026
The EU officially announced the extension of safeguard measures for certain steel products until June 30, 2026. The European Commission has also made some unpopular changes to safeguard measures, such as reducing liberalization quotas from 4% per year to 1%, and introducing a maximum of 15% duty-free quota per country for product categories and 16 product categories at the beginning of the quarter. In particular, the maximum import quantity limit was widely criticized by consumer organizations after its announcement, but as often happens, these restrictions either came too late or were completely ignored by big shots in the European Union.
2. EU members do not welcome counter evidence
The reason for extending safeguard measures also indicates that the European Commission did not take into account the objections raised by market participants in its judgment. This is another example of dishonesty, showing that the von der Leyen system is ready to resort to means to safeguard its own power.
3. Thyssenkrupps containment tactics?
In June 2024, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe (tkSE) confirmed its climate goals as an external organization. However, tkSE naturally forgot to mention in the Associated Press press release that the organization was accused of being greatly influenced by multinational corporations that have been trying to soften its climate goals for many years.
Indulgent Payment: Are Steel Giants Getting rid of True Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction through Purchasing?
In fact, it is now possible to break free from the obligation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by purchasing franchise payments, which may be one of the main reasons why its climate goals have been certified as "scientifically sound". The German steel giant is one of the largest carbon dioxide polluters in Europe. Undoubtedly, many people are now seeking similar suspicions about the groups latest statement, which suddenly excludes layoffs due to necessary restructuring of steel production.
TKSE announced a reduction of over 2 million tons in crude steel production capacity at its Duisburg factory, which was also used as one of the key reasons for the EUs extension of safeguard measures.
